In late December 2018 the Office of Behavioral Health announced a moratorium on civil admissions to the Mental Health Institute at Fort Logan (CMHIFL). Under this plan, as patients are discharged from treatment at Fort Logan their spaces (approximately 94 beds) are to be filled by individuals charged with a crime who are under orders to undergo competency restoration to stand trial. In the summer of 2018 Disability Law Center (DLC) had reopened their lawsuit with the Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS) for compliance with a Settlement Agreement reached years ago. This agreement was for CDHS to provide inpatient competency restoration services within 28 days of a court order or face sanctions and fines.

We maintain an active presence in the U.S. Capitol on priority issues with relationships on both sides of the aisle. NAMI also has a strong presence in all 50 states, advocating for state laws, as well as county and local policies that will ensure that people get the help they need.
